Man Dies After Being Gored by Bull at Festival in Cádiz Town
A resident of Arcos de la Frontera died after spending 12 days in intensive care following an incident during the Toro del Barrio Bajo event on October 24.
A man from Arcos de la Frontera, in the province of Cádiz, has died after being seriously injured by a bull during a traditional street festival in the town. He had been receiving treatment in intensive care for 12 days following the incident.
The accident happened on Saturday, October 24, during the Toro del Barrio Bajo celebration. The victim, a resident of the Barriada de la Paz neighbourhood, was gored in the chest by a bull named Cumbrerito.
He was taken to Jerez Hospital, where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His death was confirmed in early November, following the serious injuries he sustained during the event.
Mayor of Arcos expresses condolences
Arcos de la Frontera mayor Miguel Rodríguez publicly expressed his condolences to the victim’s relatives after the news of his death became known.
The mayor said he deeply regretted what had happened and offered his support to the family during this difficult time.
The incident has affected the local community, particularly residents who were following the man’s condition during his hospital stay.
Two bulls were scheduled to run through the streets
The Toro del Barrio Bajo event took place on October 24 and included the release of two bulls, Cumbrerito and Angelito.
According to the published event schedule, the first bull was due to be released at 3pm, followed by the second at 5pm. The fatal incident involved Cumbrerito, the first animal to take part in the event.
The celebration was organised by the Peña Taurina del Toro del Aleluya, with support from Arcos Town Hall. The event was intended to promote the tradition of bull runs in the municipality.
The gathering had also received the required authorisation from the regional authorities, according to reports about the incident.
Bull-running traditions in Arcos de la Frontera
The Toro del Barrio Bajo is one of the bull-running events held in Arcos de la Frontera. The town is also known for the Toro del Aleluya, a long-established celebration held each year on Easter Sunday.
That event attracts residents and visitors who gather to watch the bulls run through designated streets.
The October festival has a shorter history. It was held twice during 2026: an earlier edition took place in January after the 2025 event was cancelled because of rain, followed by the October celebration.
Questions over safety at traditional events
The fatal incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with public bull-running celebrations. These events remain part of the cultural calendar in several Spanish towns, but accidents can have serious consequences for participants.
The death in Arcos de la Frontera marks a tragic end to the October celebration and has left the victim’s family and local community mourning his loss.
