High-Speed Train Fire in Zaragoza Forces Evacuation of 283

A fire aboard a high-speed train in Zaragoza, Spain, forced the evacuation of 283 passengers and disrupted rail services between Madrid and Barcelona.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a Renfe AVE train travelling from Madrid-Puerta de Atocha to Figueres experienced a fire in its rear section. The train had departed Madrid at 2:27 p.m., with smoke and flames detected at approximately 4:05 p.m.

According to information released by Renfe, all 283 passengers were evacuated following established safety procedures. No injuries were reported, although the Government of Aragon said a woman and a person with reduced mobility required medical assistance.

Firefighters from Zaragoza Provincial Council responded to the emergency and extinguished the blaze, which affected the train’s engine area and part of the adjoining carriage.

Fire Disrupts Madrid–Barcelona High-Speed Services

The incident caused significant disruption to one of Spain’s main high-speed rail corridors. Several trains were delayed or temporarily stopped, affecting thousands of passengers travelling between Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona.

Renfe reported that approximately 40 services were affected, impacting more than 11,000 travellers. The disruption continued into the evening as railway authorities worked to restore operations and arrange the removal of the damaged train.

By Tuesday, services were still experiencing delays while the train was removed and restrictions remained in place on the section between Ricla and Plasencia de JalĂłn in Zaragoza province.

Passengers were advised to check their train status before travelling to stations, as departure and arrival times could change while recovery operations continued.

Cause of the Fire Remains Unknown

Renfe deputy general director Sergio Bueno said the train had undergone its scheduled inspections. However, the precise cause of the fire had not been established in the initial reports.

The incident highlights the potential for a single railway emergency to affect a large number of passengers across an interconnected high-speed network. Investigations and technical checks are necessary to establish what happened and determine whether any additional safety measures are required.

Renfe Offers Refunds and Ticket Changes

Renfe announced that affected passengers could access refunds and ticket changes without additional charges under the arrangements introduced following the disruption.

Travellers planning to use the Madrid–Barcelona route should:

  • Check the latest service updates through Renfe’s official channels.
  • Confirm departure and arrival times before leaving for the station.
  • Review the available refund or alternative-booking options if their journey has been affected.
  • Allow extra time for onward connections while delays continue.

The partial restoration of rail traffic does not necessarily mean that all services have returned to their regular schedules.

What Passengers Need to Know

The evacuation was completed without reported injuries, but the incident caused widespread disruption to rail travel. The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, and the impact on individual journeys depends on the service and timetable.

Passengers travelling through Zaragoza or between Madrid and Barcelona should continue to check official railway updates before setting out.
